When Tinkercad is a good fit
Tinkercad is a useful starting point for learning 3D design. You build objects from shapes, combine solids and holes, and export the result for printing. Its iPad app supports STL, OBJ, and SVG import, plus STL, OBJ, USDZ, and SVG export. It requires an internet connection.
For classrooms, Tinkercad also provides teaching tools, electronics simulation, and coding activities. Forma3D is a mesh editor, not a replacement for those education and circuit-design features.
When to choose Forma3D
- Edit an existing STL: select vertices, edges, and faces rather than rebuilding the object from primitive shapes. See the STL editing guide.
- Prepare a multi-color print: assign palette colors to faces and export 3MF for a compatible slicer workflow. See colored 3MF export.
- Work locally: core modeling and mesh processing run on the device. Downloading the app, purchases, and optional cloud uploads are separate network operations.
- Scan a physical object: use Apple Object Capture on supported LiDAR devices, then edit the reconstructed mesh. Check the scanning requirements first.
- Work on iPhone as well as iPad: Forma3D provides the same mesh-editing workflow on both device types.

Move a Tinkercad design into Forma3D
- Export the design as an STL from Tinkercad and save it to Files.
- Import the STL into Forma3D and verify its dimensions. STL does not encode a standardized unit, so check the intended millimeter size.
- Edit, cut, or combine the mesh. For multi-filament work, assign colors with Face Paint.
- Export STL for a single-material workflow or 3MF for supported color workflows, then inspect the result in the destination slicer.
An STL export is a mesh snapshot: it does not preserve Tinkercad's editable shape history or carry per-face colors. Keep the original Tinkercad design if you want to change those source shapes later.
