Nomad Sculpt vs Forma3D
Nomad Sculpt and Forma3D both run on iPad, but they are built for different stages of a 3D project. Nomad Sculpt is an organic sculpting app; Forma3D is a mesh editor focused on preparing models for 3D printing — repair, splitting, face painting, and STL/3MF export.

When Nomad Sculpt is a good fit
Nomad Sculpt is designed for organic modeling: characters, creatures, terrain, and freeform shapes built with digital clay brushes. If your task is shaping a figure from scratch with smooth, hand-sculpted surfaces, that is the workflow it is made for.
Nomad Sculpt also supports vertex painting for coloring sculpted models inside the app. Nomad Sculpt is sold as a paid app; check the App Store for current pricing in your region.
When to choose Forma3D
- Prepare an existing model for printing: import an STL and edit it directly — vertices, edges, and faces — instead of resculpting. See the STL editing guide.
- Repair a broken mesh: fix non-manifold geometry and holes that cause slicer errors before you print.
- Paint faces for multi-filament output: assign palette colors to faces and export a colored 3MF. See colored 3MF export.
- Make dimensioned parts: primitives, transforms, and Boolean operations for functional prints rather than sculpted forms.
- Split or cut a large model: divide an STL to fit a smaller build plate. See split STL for 3D printing.
- Work on iPhone too: the same mesh-editing workflow runs on iPhone and iPad, on-device.

| Workflow | Nomad Sculpt | Forma3D |
|---|---|---|
| iPad app | Yes | Yes, also available on iPhone |
| Modeling approach | Organic sculpting with brushes | Mesh editing, primitives, and Boolean operations |
| Existing STL files | Import for sculpting | Edit, repair, and split for printing |
| Multi-color print export | Vertex-painted meshes | Face-painted colored 3MF for multi-filament workflows |

| Pricing | Paid app | Free download; full-access features require an in-app purchase |
Use them together
The apps complement each other in a print pipeline. Sculpt the shape in Nomad Sculpt, export the mesh as STL, then open it in Forma3D to repair geometry, cut or split the model, paint faces for a colored print, and export the final file for your slicer.
Get started
Choose Nomad Sculpt for organic sculpting. Choose Forma3D when the goal is a print-ready mesh on iPad or iPhone — repaired, split, and color-assigned. Forma3D offers monthly, annual, and lifetime full-access options; check current App Store pricing before purchasing.

Frequently asked questions
Is Nomad Sculpt or Forma3D better for 3D printing?
They cover different stages. Nomad Sculpt shapes organic forms from a sphere or base mesh; Forma3D prepares the resulting or downloaded mesh for printing — repair, splitting, face painting, and STL/3MF export.
Do I need both apps?
A common iPad workflow is sculpting in Nomad, then print-preparing in Forma3D. If you only edit downloaded or scanned meshes, Forma3D alone covers that.
How do the prices compare?
Nomad Sculpt is a $19.99 one-time purchase. Forma3D is a free download with monthly, annual, and lifetime full-access options.
